<meta content="Debate about urban sustainability is in some danger of splitting into narrow, technical disagreements in which value-laden questions about the purposes, meanings and lived reality of cities are easily lost. As one way of anchoring debate about urban futures in foundational questions, this paper focuses on the history of suburban ambivalence towards modern development that has helped shape Australian cities. This history offers important insights into contemporary suburban aspirations and environmentalist critique of them. It is presented here as a contribution to efforts to constitute urban sustainability as a viable democratic project built on more than expert discourses of efficiency and risk." name="eprints.abstract" />

As one way of anchoring debate about urban futures in foundational questions, this paper focuses on the history of suburban ambivalence towards modern development that has helped shape Australian cities. This history offers important insights into contemporary suburban aspirations and environmentalist critique of them. It is presented here as a contribution to efforts to constitute urban sustainability as a viable democratic project built on more than expert discourses of efficiency and risk.</p></div><table style="margin-bottom: 1em" cellpadding="3" class="not_ep_block" border="0"><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Item Type:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">Article</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Additional Information:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">The definitive version is available online at http://www.informaworld.com/</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Keywords:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">sustainability, suburbs, anti-suburbanism, history, modernity, values</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Subjects:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row"><a href="http://eprints.utas.edu.au/view/subjects/370107.html">370000 Studies in Human Society &gt; 370100 Sociology &gt; 370107 Social Change</a><br /><a href="http://eprints.utas.edu.au/view/subjects/310105.html">310000 Architecture, Urban Environment and Building &gt; 310100 Architecture and Urban Environment &gt; 310105 History of the Built Environment</a><br /><a href="http://eprints.utas.edu.au/view/subjects/370401.html">370000 Studies in Human Society &gt; 370400 Human Geography &gt; 370401 Urban and Regional Studies</a></td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">ID Code:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">1512</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Deposited By:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row"><span class="ep_name_citation"><span class="person_name">Dr Aidan Davison</span></span></td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Deposited On:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">03 Aug 2007</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Last Modified:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">09 Jan 2008 02:30</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">ePrint Statistics:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row"><a target="ePrintStats" href="/es/index.php?action=show_detail_eprint;id=1512;">View statistics for this ePrint</a></td></tr></table><p align="right">Repository Staff Only: <a href="http://eprints.utas.edu.au/cgi/users/home?screen=EPrint::View&amp;eprintid=1512">item control page</a></p>
